Let's get a Harold's in Midway Airport

Every time I leave Sweet Home Chicago, I wish that I could get a half for the flight. Frankly I wish that I could get four or five halves and take some home.

Imagine a Harold's franchise at Midway airport -- you wouldn't even need bullet-proof glass! It would be the safest, most secure Harold's on the planet (where else can you get all potential customers to remove their shoes to be x-rayed before placing their orders?)

Anyone connected with the Midway Airport people? If we can get a Yes from them and from the good people at Harold's, I just know that money would be available for the project. . .

Where else would you like to see a new Harold's?

Long time reader, first time poster. May seem a little ridiculous, but how about 54th and woodlawn. You know, when walking to Kimbark is just too long to wait for 5 wings with extra hot. Besides that? I don't know, how bout on Michigan Ave next to the Gap.

I'm from Singapore and I've heard so much about this legendary fried chicken. But yet to taste it. Somebody open one in Singapore?

True story - a friend from college graduated and went on to grad school out in North Carolina, or somesuch. He actually sent cash + a roundtrip plane ticket to have a friend fly down with a duffel bag filled with a variety pack of halves.

It has been almost 20 years, but Ben V., I salute you!

Don't forget O'Hare, McCarron in Vegas, LAX, Kennedy in NY, and every other major airport. Well maybe not LAX, they don't like healthy midwest food out there. :)

Apparently, from all the comments, it's time for Harold's chicken shack franchises. I am also from Chicago and miss it so much as well. I live in California and was searching for franchise information , but found none. I would purchase one to open out here in a minute!

Harold's at Midway would rock! They've got all sorts of Chicago businesses there... Way more than O'Hare.

But in a way, it's nice that Harold's isn't that obvious to tourists ;)

The person from the 3rd comment must have lived in Hitchcock Hall at the UofC. I too, remember the story of Ben Venator and the chicken delivery via airplane. I don't remember who it was that went, but there were a few guys that seemed to make the trip to 53rd street every night and then eat their Harold's in the common room down in the basement. All you would smell down there was Harold's after about 10pm. Happy memories!

I am Ben Venator and am enjoying my 15 minutes of Harold's fame. The true story is a little different but even more fun to tell. I was in grad school at UNC Chapel Hill and one of the students in our department who shared office space with me was interviewing for a job at the UofC. He mentioned that Chicago had sent him two round trip tickets, as it was cheaper that way. The legs he was not using were from Chicago to RDU and right back to Chicago. The lightbulb went off in my head and it occurred to me that I could get someone from Hitchcock to bring me a couple of dark halfs, livers and gizzards (salt, pepper, extra hot and extra barbecue sauce). I called Hitchcock and the Dorm Council resolved to recruit a mule to deliver the chicken. I believe the Council even paid for it.
On the delivery day, my anticipation was almost too much to process. After a long day of telling the story of the impending delivery, I met my girlfriend and stopped by my apartment before heading out to the airport. There was a message on my machine. The currier missed the flight. My heart sank. We went out for dinner. When we came back there multiple messages. The heroic representative of the 'Cock had caught another flight and was trying to get in touch with me. Then the phone rang and it he was at RDU, but had to get on the flight back. I then came up with the plan. He was to leave the Chicken in an airport locker and leave the key for the locker with someone at the airport.
We drove out to the airport, had to ask whoever it was for the key to the locker and then had the happy ending of all great treasure hunts, found the goods.
Man, was that chicken good! I still love Harold's (if there a choice of cities for training I take for work, I always pick Chicago and now that there are Harold's downtown I always eat lunch, dinner and grab two or three for the plane ride back) and have been gratified by the deserved national attention it received. I never once went to Ribs N Bibs, because I could never get that close to Harolds and not get my dark half and liter of RC.
